Halloween Party Food for 10

Pizza comes to $47.97. The same number of people on wings comes to $91.99. Both figures are built from what the chains themselves say a portion is, which only two of them bother to publish.

A party pack of chicken wingsFeeds 10From $47.97

The short answer

For 10 people, 3 XL Cheese Pizzas cost $47.97, about $4.80 a head. The cheapest wing order that feeds the same 10 is the 75pc Pack (Boneless) at $91.99, or $9.20 a head. Wings cost 92% more to feed the same room.

Both numbers rest on something most party guides skip: how much food you are actually buying. Two of these chains tell you. The rest sell a family pack and never say what a family is.

How much food is a portion?

This is the part nobody answers, so here is what the chains themselves say.

They tell you

Wingstop

Sells a 15pc Meal for 2 (Boneless) for $24.59. Fifteen pieces, two people, so 7.5 wings a head. That makes 75 wings for 10. It is the only serving figure any of these chains publishes.

Half the answer

Papa John's

Prints a slice count on every pizza, 10 on an extra large, and stops there. Three slices a head is our planning figure, not theirs, which is why it is labelled as ours everywhere it appears below.

Feeding 10, by the order

Each row is a real order: how many of that item it takes to reach the portion above, and what the whole thing costs.

Pizza, 30 slices

Papa John's publishes one national price for these, so there is no cheapest and dearest restaurant to show.

The packs that never say what a family is

We hold prices for 28 family packs and party boxes across four chains, from $39.99 to $84.90. Not one publishes how many people it feeds, so no honest cost per head can be worked out for any of them. Useful food, impossible to plan a party around without calling first.

Four things worth knowing before you order

  • Order the biggest pack, not several small ones. The 75pc Pack (Boneless) works out cheaper per wing than any combination of smaller packs that reaches the same count.
  • Ask what a family pack feeds. Every one of the 28 packs above leaves it out. A two minute phone call is the difference between enough food and half enough.
  • Three slices a head is a floor, not a ceiling. It is our figure, and a party that runs past nine o'clock will clear four. One more XL Cheese Pizza is $15.99 and costs less than running out.
  • Prices differ by restaurant. Everything here is the middle price across the restaurants we read. Check your own before you build a budget on it.

How we worked this out

Every price comes from a chain's own menu, though not all of them the same way, and the difference matters enough to spell out. The wings and the family packs were read restaurant by restaurant, so each carries a real cheapest and dearest store. The Papa John's prices are the chain's published national menu: one figure, no range, which is why the pizza table shows no low and high. Your restaurant may charge differently.

The portion figures come from the chains where they publish them: Wingstop names a piece count and calls one pack a meal for two, and Papa John's prints a slice count on each pizza. One number is ours rather than theirs, three slices a head, and it is labelled as ours everywhere it is used. Nothing else was assumed, and where a chain publishes no serving count the table says "not stated" rather than guessing one.

Questions people ask

How much food do you need for a Halloween party of 10?+

Only two chains tell you. Wingstop sells a 15pc Meal for 2 (Boneless) at $24.59, which works out at 7.5 wings a head, so 10 people need 75 wings. Papa John's prints a slice count on every pizza, and at 3 slices a head that is 30 slices. Every other chain sells a "family pack" without saying what a family is.

What is the cheapest way to feed 10 people?+

Pizza. 3 XL Cheese Pizza comes to $47.97, about $4.80 a head. The cheapest wing order that feeds the same 10 is the 75pc Pack (Boneless) at $91.99, or $9.20 a head. Wings cost 92% more for the same number of people.

How many wings per person for a party?+

7.5, by Wingstop's own arithmetic: it sells a 15 piece pack and calls it a meal for two. That is the only serving figure any of these chains publishes, so it is the one worth using.

How many pizzas for 10 people?+

3 extra large, which is 30 slices. Three slices a head is our planning figure, not Papa John's: they print how many slices a pizza has and leave the rest to you. Hungry adults will clear four, so add a pizza if the party runs long.

Do restaurant family packs feed a party?+

Nobody will tell you. We hold prices for 28 family packs and party boxes across four chains, from $39.99 to $84.90, and not one of them publishes a serving count. Ask your restaurant before you order for a crowd.

Where do these prices come from?+

Each chain's own menu, but not all in the same way. The wings and the family packs were read restaurant by restaurant, so those carry a real cheapest and dearest restaurant beside them. The Papa John's pizza prices are the chain's published national menu, one figure with no range, which is why no low and high appears in the pizza table. No figure on this page was estimated.
