Sonic Drive-In is America's original drive-in restaurant, founded by Troy Smith in 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, originally as Top Hat Drive-In. The name changed to Sonic in 1959 as the brand began franchising across the country. The format has remained unchanged for over 70 years: you pull into a covered stall, order from a two-way speaker, and a carhop delivers your food directly to your car. Some locations still use roller skates. Today Sonic operates more than 3,500 locations across 46 states.

The Sonic menu in 2026 covers burgers, hot dogs, crispy chicken sandwiches, tater tots, a full breakfast lineup, and a drinks program with over a million possible combinations. Happy Hour runs every single day from 2 PM to 4 PM, offering all drinks and slushes at half price. Cherry Limeade, Ocean Water, and the Route 44 Slush are the signature drinks that no other fast food chain can replicate. Prices range from $1.99 for an Ice Cream Cone to $11.49 for the SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger Combo.

What sets Sonic apart from every other fast food chain is the combination of the carhop service model and the drinks customization system. You can mix any flavor into any slush or limeade, add cream, add real fruit, or create combinations not listed on the menu. During Happy Hour, those combinations cost half price.
